A 20-year-old man has had surgery in Southland Hospital and is being flown to Dunedin Hospital after being run over early this morning.
It happened just before 4am on the Winton Hedgehope Highway, north of Norman Road.
A group of young people were being dropped off after returning from a private function. The 20-year-old got out of the van and was run over at low speed.
The driver is speaking with police and no one else is being sought.
Police earlier said the man had been sleeping on the road, and that he was 19 years old rather than 20.
