A west Auckland holiday programme has apologised after leaving a five-year-old behind at a swimming pool for more than an hour.

The Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust's holiday programme took around 100 kids to Parakai Springs in northwest Auckland on Friday.

Supervisors didn't realise the boy was missing until his grandma showed up a Ranui Primary School to collect him, 38km from the springs, Stuff reports.

They five-year-old was playing on a bouncy castle when the bus left without him. He chased it, but couldn't keep up.

Trust staff reportedly didn't carry out a head count to ensure they had every child before leaving.

"It really makes my blood boil that they had no idea he was missing at all," the boy's mother Stephanie Pita told Stuff.

Springs staff looked after the boy after finding him wandering around the carpark, but his mother said it could have ended very badly.

"He was near water - anything could have happened."

The Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust declined to comment when approached by Stuff.
