Two Dunedin police officers have been checked over by medical staff after a 35-year-old woman with Hepatitis C spat on them.

The incident happened while the woman was being processed at the Dunedin Police Station for an unrelated charge of wilful damage on Tuesday.

It is routine procedure for officers to be checked if they are spat on somewhere where they could contract the virus, police say.

Acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson told RNZ the officers had since returned to duty.
