Video has emerged of a wanted criminal evading police through the roads of Canterbury on Thursday.

A local man caught the wanted man and police following him on his dash camera as he was driving between Rolleston and Hornby.

The footage shows a police car lying in wait on the side of the road in Templeton and a blue car performing a dangerous undertake before speeding away.

Police quickly followed, as both a marked and unmarked police car forced the local man to pull over and make way.

The local told Newshub he initially noticed the car following him dangerously before it took off at great speed.

"He then shot up the inside median strip, I was already travelling at 80kph+ so I am guessing he was doing double that as you can see in the video he was moving quickly," he said.

Police have confirmed they tried to stop the man at around 12:07pm on Thursday, while he was near Culverden.

Instead of stopping, he took off, which was part of the chase the local man witnessed.

Police say they only chased the man for a short time before abandoning the pursuit due to concerns for public safety.

Around two hours later police were told the man was at an address in Ashburton. An Armed Offenders Squad was called in, but he left before they arrived.

He was eventually arrested in Tinwald following another short pursuit, after he was spotted at the intersection of Beach Rd and River Rd.

He's since been charged with failing to stop, driving in a dangerous manner and possession of an offensive weapon. He has been remanded in custody is expected to appear in court on May 25.
