A drunk 34-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the chest near Gisborne early on Monday morning.
Emergency services attended the scene at Tokomaru Bay, 91km north of Gisborne, just before 7am.
"He appears to have been intoxicated and has accidentally shot himself," a police spokesperson said.
He was flown to Gisborne Hospital and is in a moderate condition.
