A Kiwi mother has shared her unique method of teaching her son a lesson after his tantrum led to a dangerous situation.

Sandy Gribble's 3-year-old son Lachie tested every boundary on Saturday morning and when his tantrum erupted, she sent him to his room for a time out.

When she went to check on him, she realised he had jumped out through his bedroom window, and her stomach sank.

She raced out of the house to look for him and luckily he hadn't made it too far.

"Running down the road, the sheer relief that he is unhurt and not been mowed down by a car. Not the walk of shame I'd ever imagine doing in my life cause I just realise only wearing my t-shirt and underwear," she shared on Facebook.

But Lachie wasn't having it and started screaming at her.

"'YOU POO MUM YOU GIANT POO I'M NOT YOUR FRIEEEEEEND ANYMORE'. Awesome thanks kid, now all the neighbours have come out to view the shit show and I love it how you have kept the performance up while everyone judges me for being the worst mum ever."

Once they were safely back inside, Ms Gribble pondered how to get Lachie to take the danger of the road seriously, when she had an idea.

"I called the police station. I spoke to Lisa, who laughed and told me it was quiet and to bring him in," she said.

A couple of police officers at the station explained to the toddler that it's not a good idea to run away from home.

"After all this, he bloody got it! It has actually sunk into his 1216 day old brain that roads are not built for toddlers and half naked mum and that he should have listened."

Ms Gribble said she will be following police advice to install locks on Lachie's bedroom window.
