If you're headed towards Cape Reinga, it's probably best you don't stop for a swim.

Houhora harbour master Greg Gemmell said it had been brought to his attention that "hungry" sharks had been sighted more than once.

"These sharks have been sighted more than once by people that do know what a great white looks like," Mr Gemmel wrote in a Facebook post.

"This has been both inside the [Houhora] harbour and up the coast on our local swimming beaches.

"I have spoken to powers above, and we may look at some signage - but please be aware and alert if you are near the water, and report to me any sightings."

People reacted to the posts with both excitement and fear.

"This reminds me of Jaws... haha but cheers for the heads up will definitely not be kayak fishing anytime soon," one man said.

"Good to see there's a few still around the east coast of North Island," another wrote.

"I know that there are some on the west out in the Manukau, but I wish I could see one - hope their numbers can increase globally, we need them."
