This article deals with mental health problems, including attempted suicide.

An officer has penned an open letter to the young woman she saved from committing suicide.

Jazz Thornton penned a letter on Sunday to Constable Meika Campbell thanking her for her help when Ms Thornton tried to take her own life.

Const Campbell carried Ms Thornton "kicking and screaming" to a police car and waited with her for the ambulance.

She even stayed at the hospital long after her shift had ended trying to comfort Ms Thornton and went visited her on her 21st birthday to congratulate her.

Ms Thornton said she didn't think she could live the life she does now as the co-founder of non-profit mental health organisation Voices of Hope without Const Campbell's help that night.

"Your intervention and care ensured that I lived to see breakthrough and freedom," she wrote.

"Thank you for putting your life on the line for our country and while doing so, saving mine."

In her own open letter on the Auckland City District Police Facebook page, Const Campbell has said she was extremely moved by Ms Thornton's article and her struggle with depression.

"I feel privileged and honoured that her story was told and commend her for openly sharing her demons to make a difference," she said.

"Jazz is an inspiration and has gone on to help so many of those within our communities battling depression."

For Const Campbell attending a situation like the one Ms Thornton was in is part of the job and many of her colleagues will have attended similar call outs.

Ms Thornton's feedback has given Const Campbell an immeasurable amount of satisfaction with her job and she hopes in future people will be there for other kiwis in crisis.

"I have recently become a mother, I can only hope that in the future, should my daughter ever be in need of help, there will be someone as eager to go above and beyond to keep her in this world with me," she wrote.
