Investigations are underway after double-murderer Graeme Burton was stabbed at Auckland Prison.

Ambulances were called to Paremoremo at 9:30am on Friday.

Burton has been taken to hospital, and his condition is not life-threatening.

Police and Corrections are looking into the assault.

"Violence is never acceptable and all prisoners who resort to this behaviour will be held to account," chief custodial officer Neil Beales told Newshub.

Burton's first murder was in 1992. He was on parole in 2007 when he shot another man dead whilst on a drug-fuelled crime rampage.

"When I shot the innocent people I realised I was the bad guy and I had to be shot quickly," he later told the Parole Board. "I was gutted that I wasn't killed."

He is reportedly usually kept in segregation.
