Auckland commuters have been lashed by hail on Thursday as thunderstorms loom over the city.

Thunder and lightning can be heard rumbling over Auckland, and lightning strikes could be seen shortly before 7am.

And the storm brought giant hail stones to unfortunate residents.

"Sounds like some golf balls falling on my roof," one person told Newshub.

Video showed his front yard littered with the huge frozen balls.

MetService warns of a moderate thunderstorm risk for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui and Taranaki, until midday.

"These thunderstorms could bring localised heavy rain of 10 to 20mm/hr," MetService says.

"A lower risk of thunderstorms extends slightly to the east of the main risk area."

Rain is also expected in the area.

The front is expected to move south on Thursday afternoon, bringing a low risk of thunderstorms to Westland throughout the evening.
