Two people have been critically injured following a crash in the south Auckland suburb of Ōtara.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Ormiston Rd around 2:10pm on Thursday.

Sergeant Rob Savage told Newshub the accident occurred when one vehicle didn't stop at an intersection and was hit by another car.

The resulting force sent the vehicle into the forecourt of the petrol station, where it hit a car that was stopped for refuelling and eventually came to a stop.

Video from the crash shows severely damaged cars strewn across the forecourt - one with its roof taken clean off.

Cordons have been put in place at the intersection of Preston Rd and Jarvis Way, as well as the intersection of Murchison Rd and Geraldine Rd.

The diversions are expected to remain in place for a while, and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

Sgt Savage says people need to be aware of what they're doing when they enter an intersection.

"Police are urging people to slow down and look both ways at intersections," he told Newshub. "We want people to be safe out there."

The serious crash unit is on the scene.
