A child and a teenager have died, and a 15-year-old is in a critical condition following a police pursuit near Palmerston North on Monday afternoon.

At 1:30pm the 15-year-old male driver of a stolen Subaru, who was breaching his bail conditions, failed to stop for police on Monrad St in Palmerston North.

The vehicle continued to drive onto Pioneer Highway and crashed into a power pole at the intersection of the highway and Shirriffs Rd.

The front passenger, a 12-year-old girl, died at the scene, and a 15-year-old female who was in the back of the car was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The driver was taken to Palmerston North Hospital and later died.

Central district Commander Superintendent Sue Schwalger says: "This is an incredibly sad time for the families of the two young people who have died, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

She says family liaison officers are working with the families, and Victim Support has been offered.

The serious crash unit is investigating the crash and an internal police investigation has commenced.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority will also be notified.
