A car fire has closed Homer Tunnel on State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford Sound in Fiordland.

Police were notified of the fire shortly after 3:40pm on Tuesday, with officers and Fire and Emergency (FENZ) currently at the scene.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) confirmed the tunnel has been closed due to the blaze, meaning those headed to the Milford Sound will need to reschedule their trip. SH94 is the only road into the fiord.

Initial reports indicate that no one was injured when the car caught fire.

SH94 runs through the 1.2 kilometre long tunnel, linking Milford Sound to Te Anau and Queenstown via the Darran Mountain range at the Homer Saddle.

NZTA will provide an update when the tunnel is reopened.
