Fire at Christchurch wastewater treatment plant sends thick black smoke and 'horrible smells' across city

A fire at a Christchurch wastewater treatment plant is sending enormous plumes of black smoke across the Garden City.

Seven fire trucks are attending the blaze and people in the area are being urged to close their windows and doors.

Christchurch resident Chris Brent told Newshub winding up his windows didn't block the smell.

"Very very horrible smells, even my windows were up and I could smell it."

Brent said the wind is blowing the smoke around quickly

It is believed the blaze started on the roof of a building at the Bromley facility, then jumped to another before they both collapsed.

Brent told Newshub residents rushed to the area to watch the thick black smoke blow out from the treatment plant.

"Horrendous amount of people, the road is gridlocked at the moment."
