Time is up for anyone with a bright idea about what a new New Zealand flag could look like.
Flag design submissions closed at 11.59pm yesterday and by that time more than 9000 designs had been published online.
But the Flag Consideration Panel says that number could increase to as many as 10,000 by the time they've moderated the entries that came in close to deadline.
The panel now has the task of narrowing down the thousands of entries to a long list of 50 to 70 designs.
The long list will be out by mid-August and the final four alternatives will be chosen by mid-September.
The designs already submitted feature koru, kiwi and chocolate fish, and some of the more unusual creations have made headlines overseas.
