Cycle trail project boosting economic growth
The cycle trail project launched in 2009 has created more than 1000 jobs and at least 60 new businesses, Prime Minister John Key says.
It was his decision, as tourism minister, to build the Great Rides network of trails to attract international tourists.
So far $55 million has been spent on them and Mr Key today announced another $935,000 to complete the Alps 2 trail.
"The Great Rides have proven to be a significant driver of local and international tourism which is helping New Zealand stay on the international map as a tourist destination," he said.
