Greens: Power prices ahead of inflation
Power prices are rising faster than inflation and line charges now make up 40 percent of household bills, the Greens say.
Energy spokesman Gareth Hughes says the latest Energy in New Zealand report shows prices rose 3.8 percent in the 12 months to March this year while inflation was only 0.1 percent.
"The electricity market is broken when line charges are now up to 40 percent of a household's electricity bill, and rising fast," he said.
"The Government needs to tell the Electricity Authority to go back to the drawing board on its proposals to raise residential electricity line charges even more for some households, while lowering them for huge industrial users like the Tiwai Point smelter."
