Kiribati family takes NZ case to UN

A Kiribati family fleeing the impact of climate change on their homeland have asked the United Nations to help them fight deportation from New Zealand, which has ruled they are not refugees.

Ioane Teitiota, his wife Erika and their three New Zealand-born children lost their final bid for refugee status in New Zealand in July, after overstaying his visa in 2011.

The Supreme Court ruled that while Kiribati faces challenges from rising sea levels, Teitiota did not face serious harm if he returned there.

Their lawyer, Michael Kidd, is asking for a stay on any deportation order until the result of an appeal to the UN's Human Rights Committee, Radio New Zealand reported today.

He said the UN was the last legal avenue the family could pursue.
