Vladimir Putin takes a dive

Vladimir Putin is going down – in a submersible on the Black Sea, at least.

The Russian President took the small three-person craft to the bottom of the sea to get a first-hand look at an ancient Byzantine trading ship recently discovered off the coast of Crimea, the Associated Press reports.

He went down 83 metres below the surface to see what remained of the ship which dates back to the ninth or 10th century.

It's the latest in a string of publicity stunts the president has used to boost his macho side including shooting a tiger with a tranquilizer on a reserve in 2008, and riding shirtless on horseback in 2009 – both in Siberia.

He's also fitted a polar bear with an electronic collar and fired darts from a cross bow at a grey whale to collect skin samples.
