Financial hardship is forcing more people to withdraw their KiwiSaver funds, the Greens say.
The party's finance spokeswoman, Julie Anne Genter, says the Financial Market Authority's annual report on KiwiSaver shows $43 million was withdrawn last year on the grounds of significant financial hardship.
That's a 38 percent increase on the previous year.
Ms Genter says the figures mean more people are digging into their retirement savings just to get by.
"It's actually very difficult... families must typically show they have explored and exhausted all reasonable alternative sources of funding and provide detailed financial information," she said.
