Former Labour leader Phil Goff says he will announce before Christmas whether he will have a tilt for the Auckland mayoralty next year but won't yet confirm the date.
Mr Goff had taken on Helen Clark and current mayor Len Brown's former spin doctor David Lewis and booked a venue for November 22 to make the announcement.
Mr Goff would not confirm the details.
"I've always said I'd be making an announcement before Christmas," he told NZ Newswire.
However, November 22 would be about the time he would be ready to say anything.
"But I'll leave that for the announcement."
The veteran politician is the MP for the Auckland electorate of Mt Roskill, has served as a cabinet minister and led Labour to defeat at the 2011 gerenal election.
If he decided to run for mayor Labour would need to decide who it would put up in a by-election in his electorate. The party holds its conference in Palmerston North this weekend.
