Schools will be allowed to change their opening hours under law changes the Government is going to put through Parliament.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says communities will have to agree to any changes.
"It gives schools the opportunity to be more flexible in their timetables to cater to the particular needs of their school and students," she said today when she introduced the Education Legislation Bill.
It will also allow licensed home-based early childhood education centres to offer out of school care to school-age children.
Ms Parata says the change will help working parents.
