A ticket to ride the buses in Wellington just got cheaper at the weekends so people can enjoy the festive season.

Bus fares are cheaper every weekend from today until December 20 on GO Wellington or Newlands Coach Services buses, councils say.

The initiative costs about $200,000.

The fares start with $1 for one zone of travel, and a $2 adult fare or $1.50 child fare for two or three zones.

Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown is urging people to enjoy the food, drink and free museums and galleries and make a day of it in Wellington to get into the Christmas spirit.

Councillor Andy Foster, chair of the transport and urban development committee, is interested in the level of take-up.

"There are a lot of wonderful things happening in Wellington over the month leading into Christmas, we want this trial to bring more people into their city."

The changes exclude after midnight services, Airport Flyer, Valley Flyer, Mana, Newlands route 210 and Tranz Metro services.
