PPP schools will cost taxpayers - Labour

There are fears that privatising the construction of New Zealand schools will see communities lose out.

The Government intends to build and maintain six new schools using a public private partnership with expressions of interest opening next year.

But Labour's Grant Robertson says the companies involved in these ventures tend to be motivated by profit.

"We know from overseas where these privatisation experiments have taken place, a lot of community members have lost access to school facilities outside of school hours and school groups have had to pay to use those facilities," he says.

Grant Robertson says the first private school project at Hobsonville Point will end up costing taxpayers more than the touted savings.
