Extensions for leaky home owners

Dozens of leaky building owners will soon be able to make claims following changes to legislation last night.

Homeowners can now make claims within 10 years of a property's code compliance certificate being issued -- a change from earlier rules.

Previously, claims could only be made within 10 years of the last building inspection.

Also, financial assistance packages are due to expire in July, but those still progressing claims will now continue to receive help.

"The change will enable 70 homeowners previously deemed ineligible to be able to pursue their claim without the expense of individually taking each case through the courts," Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith says.
