A New Zealand First MP has renewed her call for tattooing to be regulated.
Barbara Stewart says a recent European study found 13 out of 21 common tattoo inks contained chemicals which were potentially carcinogenic.
"This information is extremely concerning as currently anyone in New Zealand can purchase a tattoo kit online and start legally tattooing," she said.
"Both the European Union and the US Food and Drug Administration have begun investigating the safety of the inks in use, and New Zealand needs to do the same."
Ms Stewart first called for tattooing to be regulated in 2013.
At the time she said at least one person a week was being admitted to hospital with problems caused by tattoos.
