Home burglaries have been raised to a priority offence and all break-ins will be attended, Police Minister Judith Collins says.
The policy came into effect on Monday and Ms Collins says it's a response to an increase in burglaries over the past 12 months, although the rate is still below that of recent years.
"The new policy sets the expectation of full attendance at dwelling burglaries so the public can now expect either a constabulary or scene of crime officer to attend within a reasonable time," she said.
"This shows police are serious about tackling burglary and also sends a clear message to offenders."
Ms Collins says there will be occasions when police can't attend for a range of reasons, including because of the wishes of the victims.
"However, the Commissioner of Police has made his expectations clear."
