Andrew King holds the narrowest of leads in the race to become Mayor of Hamilton.

As of Sunday morning, he's ahead of rival Paula Southgate 8676 to 8662 - only 14 votes separating the pair.

Whether he holds onto that lead won't be known until Thursday, but a recount could be on the cards if they remain close.

Mr King told supporters in a text message there were "hundreds" of special votes to be counted.

Ms Southgate is yet to concede.

Previous Mayor Julie Hardaker didn't run for re-election.
