High-profile web entrepreneur Kim Dotcom has hinted that the political party he founded ahead of the 2014 election may return to the fold next year.

Mr Dotcom's Internet Party, which became the Internet-Mana Party after he joined forces with long-time Labour politician Laila Harre, championed internet freedom and personal privacy.

The party failed to gain a seat in Parliament in 2014 after gaining only 1.42 percent of the vote, and Mr Dotcom said his personal reputation "was poison for what we were trying to achieve".

But now he's plotting a return, with a post on Twitter confirming the Internet Party could well try and make another run at gaining a seat in Parliament via next year's election.

"Internet Party could return in 2017," he wrote. "Independent and with bright young minds who can create a prosperous digital economy for NZ."

The party will need to meet the 5 percent threshold in order to get a seat - an achievement that would require a significant improvement on the efforts of three years ago.
