Labour MP Grant Robertson has released a photo of a homophobic envelope he received in the post at Parliament today.

It is addressed to: "Grant Robertson (Homo), House of Representatives, Wellington".

The Wellington Central MP says while there was no letter or note inside the envelope, homophobic correspondence like it is all too familiar.

"It's sadly not uncommon. It's not every week but it's every now and then, especially if I've done something that's put me in the public spotlight a bit," he says.

"It's farcical and ridiculous and I put [a photo of the letter] up on Twitter because I believe the person should be mocked," says Mr Robertson.

He says anti-gay correspondence comes with the territory of being an openly gay MP, but it must be exposed to show there's still an undercurrent of intolerance in New Zealand.

"For future reference, that's not the way to get a reply from me," he says.

Mr Robertson says he knows who the sender is, because of the terrible handwriting.
