Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will hold official talks with Prime Minister Bill English in Wellington next week on a visit marking 45 years of diplomatic relations between China and New Zealand.

Mr Li will also visit Auckland to meet with business leaders on his three-day trip.

"The visit is an important opportunity to set the agenda for the next stage of our strong relationship and demonstrates our shared commitment to open trade and economic growth," Mr English said when announcing the visit on Sunday.

The pair have met before, when Mr English was deputy prime minister and Mr Li vice premier.

"Premier Li knows New Zealand well and I look forward to discussing with him opportunities for our two countries and regions," Mr English said.

The premier's wife Professor Cheng Hong and a large official and business delegation will also travel to New Zealand.
