Newshub Poll: Gareth Morgan most popular minor party

Gareth Morgan has made a huge splash on the political scene with The Opportunities Party (TOP) beating all other minor parties in the latest Newshub-Reid Research poll.

Dr Morgan's party polled at 0.8 percent - ahead of all the Government support partners.

The Māori Party is nipping at his heels with 0.7 percent, while ACT and United Future are both trailing on 0.4 percent.

But despite Dr Morgan's meteoric rise to the top of the minor party category, 0.8 percent is nowhere near the 5 percent party vote threshold Dr Morgan needs to get into Parliament.

All the other minor parties weren't voted in on their party vote; they hold electorate seats, which gets them across the line.

Dr Morgan has ruled out standing in an electorate but has put the call out for candidates.

The poll is a sample of 1000 people, with 25 percent of respondents participating through an internet panel. The poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percent.

The Newshub-Reid Research poll was conducted March 10-19. 1000 people were surveyed, 750 by telephone and 250 by internet panel. It has a margin of error of 3.1%.
