Arrowtown all quiet ahead of spy meeting

It was just another Saturday at Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown, with nothing signalling an impending gathering of the world’s most powerful intelligence agencies and spies.

One police car was parked at the resort and there were a handful of SUVs with tinted windows grouped together at an odd spot - but they could have just as easily been tourists.

Golfers were out in force on the perfectly groomed course, and cyclists were innocently making their way through too. A wedding was being held at one of the many conference rooms.

It was all very anti-climactic, especially following reports the small town had been flooded with Secret Service agents, diplomatic police officers, and a handful of snipers. It hadn’t.

At Queenstown Airport, the area where private jets park and VIPs arrive was empty.

The only sign of an imminent spy conference was a row of Toyota Prados with big aerials, picking up security personnel for what police have called ‘Operation Silver Fern’.

Sources say the spy bosses will fly in on Sunday, including FBI director James Comey and CIA director Mike Pompeo.
