More than 5000ha of new forests are to be planted under the Government's Afforestation Grant Scheme.

The planting will be done by 101 successful applicants who will each receive grants of $1300 per hectare.

The 5183ha adds to 12,451ha planted under the scheme since 2015.

Associate Primary Industries Minister Louise Upston says the scheme is on track to reach the target of 15,000ha of new forest by 2020.

She says estimates suggest 1.1 million hectares of land is at serious risk of erosion, and forest cover is the best form of control.
