New Government officially sworn in at Parliament

The 52nd Parliament of New Zealand was formally opened on Tuesday morning during the Commission Opening.

MPs have been sworn in and Trevor Mallard has been elected as the Speaker of the House.

Later this afternoon, Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy will swear in Mr Mallard at a small ceremony at Government House in Wellington.

Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy sent Commissioners to the House to open Parliament on her behalf this morning. 

They declared Parliament to be officially open, and members chose to take an oath or an affirmation of allegiance to the Crown.

Members then voted to elect Mr Mallard as speaker. 

The state opening of Parliament on Wednesday:

On Wednesday, another ceremony, the state opening of Parliament will take place.

The Governor General will attend this ceremony and deliver a Speech from the Throne which sets out the Government's priorities for the term.
