Speaker reads opening prayer in Te Reo in Parliament

Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard read out the opening prayer (karakia) in Te Reo Māori on Thursday afternoon.

The prayer is read out by the Speaker at the start of each sitting session, a tradition that was established in 1854.

"Trevor Mallard reading the opening prayer in broken te reo. He's making an effort, and hopefully he'll get better," a Twitter user said.

"shot @TrevorMallard, if we still have to read a silly prayer at the start of parliament, it's awesome to hear it done in Te Reo," said another.
