The partner of Labour MP Tamati Coffey sustained an unfortunate injury while decorating for the holiday season.

Coffey posted a photo to Twitter and Facebook that showed his partner Tim Smith in a hospital bed.

"This is what happens when you hang Christmas decorations on the high part of the Christmas tree and get knocked out by the ceiling fan and fall on ur [sic] elbow," the caption read.

"Zoom in on elbow for extra effect. Merry Christmas."

Smith's elbow did indeed look thoroughly swollen from his festive mishap.

Commenters on both Twitter and Facebook expressed their sympathy for Smith, although some couldn't help acknowledging the comical side of the accident.

Coffey and Smith married in a civil union in 2011, and were long-term partners before then. The MP for Waiariki was a well-known TV personality before he began his political career in 2013.
