Murupara classmates on life-changing trip

Murupara classmates on life-changing trip

Murupara is a pretty low-profile sort of town. It even has an unspectacular name. Murupara means to "wipe off mud".

But sadly a bit of mud has stuck to Murupara in the past, mostly in the bad headlines about gang violence and drugs.

That's not in this story though, because this story is about kids, fun and a very big road trip.

A group of about 20 classmates are travelling the 460-odd kilometres to Wellington on a school trip to see what life outside Murupara is like.

Murupara is town where unemployment is nearing 30 percent, and 60 percent of people aged 15 and older have an annual income of $20,000 or less.

The idea of visiting Parliament is foreign, so the boys and girls of Murupara Area School have been doing a little homework to prepare themselves.
