The United Nations is setting itself 17 new sustainable development goals, with an official launch taking place this Friday in New York.

The ambitious goals aim to eradicate global poverty, guarantee gender equality for all and create sustainable cities and communities, among other things.

Kiwi clothing brand World was charged with designing a logo for the goals, with founder Denise L'Estrange Corbet saying she believes it's the first time ever the UN has endorsed a fashion brand.

"We've been working on it for a year, on what we were going to do and how we were going to do it. And we came up with this idea that a t-shirt is such a universal clothing item, and it would be great to launch that," says Ms L'Estrange Corbet.

"We'd been talking to them about doing something, and it was very much 'what should we do?' and then with the sustainable goals coming up we thought, well we'll work towards that. And so we came up with the logo - we deigned everything."
