New Zealand is a step closer to having pandas in Wellington Zoo.

The Government has taken a major step forward with National MP Gerry Brownlee pushing Wellington's case while on a business trip in China.

3 News political editor Patrick Gower says Mr Brownlee will meet with officials at Chengdu Research Base of Panda Breeding today.

"Gerry Brownlee will personally and officially hand-deliver the Wellington City Council's proposal to bring pandas here," he told the Paul Henry programme today.

"This is a really big development because a minister of Gerry Brownlee's seniority will be taken very seriously in China."
