Ian Macdonald, the chair of the committee that approved controversial immigration policy changes in Australia, says he’d be surprised if there were any Kiwi detainees who weren’t serious criminals but offers to look into any claims to the contrary. Australian authorities this week quelled a two-day riot at the Christmas Island detention centre which houses people awaiting deportation including New Zealanders.
