Russia and Turkey are in a war of words after Turkey shot down a Russian war plane. The plane was flying missions over Syria when it appeared to stray into Turkish airspace.

Auckland University professor of politics and international relations Stephen Hoadley joined Paul Henry to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East and Europe.

Mr Hoadley says if Russia cooperated with the west it would be much more effective.

He believes the downing of the Russian plane could be a turning point in the fight against ISIS.

Mr Hoadley says this is an example of how Russia reacts and President Putin is using it as an excuse for the country to flex its muscles.
