As world leaders arrive at the UN to discuss a ceasefire in the war on drugs, back here a Northland woman is counting the cost of her own brutal encounter with New Zealand's 40 year-old cannabis laws.

You might remember Kelly Van Gaalen, New Zealander of the year finalist, mother of three, caught with a couple of plants worth of dope and sent down for two years.

For the first time, we hear from her about what this punishment has done to her and her family.

That sentence was later quashed and this month she received a new sentence -- five months' community detention and 300 hours' community service.
