World population day

On July 11, 1987, the world's fifth billionth baby was born. Of course they can't really know exactly who that was, but since then the day has been earmarked as World Population Day.

More than 100 billion people have lived throughout history.

The world's population is currently 7.4 billion.

The average person on earth is a 28-years-old, right‐handed, Han Chinese male. There are 9 million people on earth who fit that description.

Massey University sociologist Paul Spoonley joined Mark Sainsbury, filling in for Paul Henry, this morning.
