Jailhouse confession credibility

More than 25 years after the Coromandel murders of Swedish tourists, Sven Urban Hoglin and Heidi Paakonen; a legal bid is underway from today in an attempt to unmask a secret witness whose evidence helped convict David Tamihere.

The witness is now facing nine charges including perjury and perverting the course of justice. The prosecution is being brought by Arthur Taylor who is currently behind bars.

The matter will be at the centre of a private prosecution being taken over the murders.

An inmate who snitched on David Tamihere and helped convict him is now facing multiple perjury charges and a charge of perverting the course of justice.

This whole case raises the question; what weight, if any, should we give to jailhouse confessions?

Massey University Law Professor Chris Gallavin discussed the matter with Paul Henry this morning.
