Newshub Nation panel: April 7, 2018

Our prisons are overflowing and former inmates keep reoffending - so what can be done about it?

On our panel to discuss the broken justice system are CEO of Hāpai Te Hauora Lance Norman, former prison inmate Alex Sweeney, Corrections Association Vice President Paul Dennehy and criminal defence lawyer Stephen Bonnar.

The panel tackle issues of race, rehabilitation and punitive justice, with former inmate Alex Swney saying:

"I'm sorry - we can't hide behind these platitudes. I'm sorry - the place is broke."

Mr Swney called for extensive prison reform, saying that "It isn't about making it easy for prisoners, it's about making it humane."

"We like to think it's rehab - it's not. It's just a miserable, punitive, negative experience."
