Conrad Smith's bassinet goes up for sale

There is no proven formula that goes into producing an All Black from birth, but sleeping in the former bassinet of Conrad Smith might get things moving in the right direction.

Elaine Bell, who lives in Whakatane and is Smith's aunty, has taken to Trade Me to sell the natural cane bassinet her nephew used to nap in – which she describes as being "built like a war tank".

It's been passed through generations of family, and is actually 53-years-old, but Ms Bell says the bassinet's claim to fame is Smith.

"I just thought I may as well cash in on my favourite nephew," she says.

Accompanied with a handwritten note from the All Black great himself, Smith claims to have spent "many happy hours sleeping in this bassinet as a baby, dreaming of becoming an All Black".

All proceeds from the sale are going straight to the hospice, and Ms Bell says besides that, the only reason she is selling the cot is due to her moving to a place which doesn't have the space for it.

The auction is listed under cots and bassinets on Trade Me, and Ms Smith fears that rugby fans won't be looking in that section for rugby memorabilia.

"People who want something to do with All Blacks probably won't be looking there will they?"

After having previously given away Smith's socks, Ms Bell says she can never believe how eager some people are to get their hands on her nephew's things.

"What actually started it was Conrad gave me a pair of his used rugby socks just to give away. I mean, who wants smelly socks? And I gave them to a guy about 10 years ago and he has never worn them, he just wants to say that he has got a pair of a world famous rugby player's socks."

Bidders have until Thursday, September 24 to try their luck at getting their hands on the famous cot, and the auction can be found here.
