Coach Stuart Lancaster paid the price for host nation England's Rugby World Cup failure, but his record suggests he was much better than previous England coaches.

Lancaster was under contract until 2020, but "stepped down by mutual consent" according to an England Rugby Football Union statement.

England, who went into the tournament with dreams of lifting the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time since 2003, failed to reach the knockout stages following defeats at Twickenham to Wales and Australia.

But statistics taken from Lancaster's coaching stint with England show that he actually outperformed his predecessors – so was his resignation unwarranted?

Lancaster finished with a win record of 69.9% percent, which is a shade under Sir Clive Woodward, who guided England to that 2003 World Cup win in Australia.

Since 1997, Woodward has had the highest win percentage of England coaches, winning 59 of his 83 games in charge.

While Lancaster's overall coaching record might seem similar, one drastic difference between him and Woodward is the win ratio against the All Blacks, Wallabies and Springboks.

England rugby has struggled against the big three Southern Hemisphere teams, dropping off dramatically in their head-to-head matches against them.
