Despite scoring his first try for the All Blacks in their emphatic win over South Africa at the weekend, Liam Squire knows he still has work to do to truly belong in international rugby.

The back-rower was solid without being spectacular in his first start against Argentina last week but really kicked into gear against the Springboks, scoring a try, setting up another and igniting a number of midfield breaks.

Speaking in Durban after the game, the 25 year old played down his impact after coming on in the 63rd minute and acknowledged that he was still getting used to the pace of international rugby.

"It's a special moment to finally get a dot but the game sort of opened up when I came on which is quite lucky", he said.

"It’s definitely a big step up but those minutes you get out there are quite vital to keep progressing so I’ll take what I can get."

Squire also gave a nod to his move south from the Chiefs to the Highlanders at the beginning of 2016 and said he was hoping to fill whatever spot the All Blacks coaching side was carving for him.

"It’s been a massive learning curve and I just want to keep building on that game."

"For whatever role I’ve got to play off the bench or starting, it’s another opportunity to put on that jersey and you want to put your best foot forward each time."
