One of New Zealand's best cyclists, Hayden Roulston, is retiring after a 15-year career here and overseas.

The 35-year-old  will have his last competitive outing at the Tour of Southland, starting in Invercargill on Sunday, October 30.

Roulston is a double Olympic medallist, having won silver and bronze on the track at the Beijing Games in 2008, and on the road he had six professional wins, rode in the Tour de France in 2009, and was a four-time New Zealand road racing champion.

He rode for five different pro teams overseas, including the Discovery Channel team in 2004 alongside the now disgraced Lance Armstrong.

As to the future? Roulston says coaching will take now centre stage, along with a number of other business interests.
